Eco-Friendly Coffee Subscriptions: What to Check Before You Buy

An eco-friendly coffee subscription should be judged by specific information about the coffee, its packaging and the way you use it. A monthly delivery alone does not prove a lower environmental impact. Here are the questions to ask before choosing a subscription, and how to apply them when shopping with Northside Coffee.

Start with the coffee's origin and producer

Look for the country, region, producer or cooperative and processing method on the product page. These details help you understand what you are buying. Traceability is useful information, but it does not by itself prove fair wages, organic certification or a particular environmental outcome.

Northside's product pages include origin and processing information for individual coffees. Roaster's Choice changes its featured coffee each month, so check the current coffee details rather than assuming every delivery has the same sourcing story or certification.

Check certifications for the specific coffee

If a certification matters to you, ask whether it applies to the coffee currently offered and what it covers. Do not assume every coffee from a roaster is organic, Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance certified because one product mentions a certified farm or cooperative. Farming practices and certification are different claims.

Read the packaging instructions

Check the disposal instructions on the bag and outer packaging. Recyclable, compostable and biodegradable describe different things; the correct disposal route depends on the material and the facilities available where you live. A photograph of a bag is not evidence that Northside's current packaging is compostable.

If the instructions are unclear, contact us before placing your order. We would rather help you check the actual packaging than make a broad promise that cannot be verified.

Choose an amount you will use

Match your delivery to your household's consumption. For example, one 18g brew each day uses approximately 540g over 30 days; two use around 1.08kg, before allowing for dialling in or extra cups. Use your own recipe and the number of people drinking coffee to estimate your needs.

Roaster's Choice offers 2 x 250g, 1kg, 1.5kg or 2kg of the featured coffee. A separate 4 x 250g selection contains four different coffees. Select whole beans if you have a grinder, or the available espresso or filter grind that suits your equipment.

Understand delivery and recurring terms

Our standard UK retail delivery is free with Royal Mail Tracked 48. You can upgrade to Tracked 24 for £3 or choose click and collect at checkout. These service names are not guaranteed arrival times. Review your selected plan, recurring price and delivery option before paying. Northside subscription plans continue until cancelled and can be cancelled at any time.

Choose Northside by taste as well as your priorities

If you enjoy discovering different coffees, explore Roaster's Choice. If you prefer a familiar cup, check the monthly subscription option on your favourite coffee's product page. For milk drinks, Altitude and Origin are useful starting points; for fruitier flavours, explore Sweet & Funky and Out of the Ordinary.
